Since we're talking water quality you'll want to include some kind of surface skimmer. A skimmer will remove the floating debris before it has a chance to settle to the bottom and start to decay. Koi Pond Design Tip: If possible set up your skimmer on the east side of the pond. Why? Typically the prevailing winds come from the west and will help blow any floating material toward the skimmer for easy extraction. Then you want to incorporate some sort of koi pond biological filter to maintain high water quality. Knowing that poor water quality will stress the fish. And a stressed showa koi can all to easily become a sick showa koi. Yet let's not overlook some rather mundane koi pond design points to keep in mind when designing your backyard pond.
