How to Marry Waterfalls and Backyard Ponds

Hearing the sound of water gushing and falling is priceless. Most have to go on vacation or camping or somewhere to hear this. But not you. Not if you incorporate the notion of backyard ponds and waterfalls in your overall landscaping scheme.

Such water features are becoming more widely popular every year it seems. More and more home owners are seeing the benefits of water features beyond the obvious. And more and more retailers are stocking up to meet the demand.

The increase in demand could stem from a couple of reasons actually. Not only do they improve the aesthetics of your home, but also, they enhance your emotional disposition and reinvigorate you as there's something soothing about the peaceful water sounds that helps you to relax.
If that sound more than just a little appealing here are some tips in helping you create the right waterfall structure for your living space. What we call the

Rights of Backyard Waterfalls and Ponds

Size It Right. Most backyard ponds ideas take into account the structure size. You know, how tall and wide do you want your pond waterfall pond to be? To help you decide on these, measure your area according to square footage. Just remember not to build too large a waterfall for your pond. Otherwise, it may look out of proportion and no where near natural.

Line It Right. Select the right kind of liner. Liners for backyard ponds and waterfalls come in varying sizes. Get a liner that measures at least 2 feet wider on both sides than the "wet area." Also get one that is a foot longer than the height.

Number It Right. Consider the type of waterfall structure you want to have. You may opt for a single waterfall next to the water garden. You may also go for a multi-streamed, cascaded waterfall. Another popular choice nowadays is a pondless waterfall. This type of waterfall feature doesn't require any pond. So it's quite different from the conventional backyard ponds and waterfalls you often see.

Pump It Right. Select the right waterfall pump. This can be done by measuring the height of the waterfall drop and the flow rate required in gallons per hour (gph). A waterfall 5-inch wide and 6-ft long will require a waterfall pump rated at 500 gph.

Lastly, design your waterfall pond according to your taste and preference. Bring out the creativity in you. Add accents by placing stones or planting plants around your pond. You can also place some fish to swim through your pond.

Soothe your mind and soul with a backyard pond that fulfills your dreams of water gardening to your heart's content.
